Macedon Ranges

993 Register Run to Macedon Ranges

26th April 2015

Come for a drive and smell the lavender

Make the most of the Anzac Day Weekend and come on the 993 Register run through the Macedon Ranges.

The route is mostly along quiet back roads and finishes with a relaxing lunch in beautiful surroundings at Lavandula Farm, Shepherds Flat.

Lavandula dates back to the 1860’s when Italian-speaking Swiss immigrants settled in the area having been attracted by the goldfields north of Daylesford. The Tinetti brothers settled on the site of present day Lavandula Farm where they mixed prospecting with farming and stayed for 4 generations. Today the family continues down the road at Cricket Willow (355 Hepburn - Newstead Rd, Shepherds Flat) where willow tress are grown and the “Crockett willow” tradition of crafting cricket bats by hand and eye is carried on. For cricket buffs this could also be a point of interest after our stay at Lavandula.

The 100-acre Lavandula property was bought by Carol White some 20 years ago when inspired to re-create the traditional mixed farm lifestyle of those early settlers. The stone farmhouse has been restored and lived in. We have a guided tour of the rustica, historic homestead arranged for 2.15pm for our PCV group where we can admire the superb simple rural Italian architecture.

Beyond the rustica is La Trattoria, the café where we will lunch. Depending on the weather lunch will be served al fresco in the ash grove or snug inside a timber building. Private parking has been arranged below the café.

Besides the shop selling local products there’s the garden, lavender fields, farmyard, olive & chestnut groves, and the vineyard to wonder through at your leisure - and in the distance the ancient volcano that delivered the good soil. The garden was designed to enhance Lavandula’s Italian style and seasonally grows food for the café.
