Terenure Classic & Vintage Motor Show

As I was leaving at about 6.15 in the morning to meet Brian at the Rue Glen north of Waterford I couldn’t have dreamed of a better morning.

The weather was promising to be great unlike last year, where we had a ferocious storm during the night, with tents being blown all over the Terenure Arena. I picked up Brian at the Rue Glen smiling as usual, with a sore head not having observed the Terenure curfew. Of course The Tall Ships are a good excuse and in fairness you wouldn’t see them all that often though I doubt Brian had seen all that many ships the night before.

As we pulled out heading for the M9 I was pushing the switch for my Sunroof to open and enjoy the sunny breeze, when nothing happened and instead I lost all my armature controls. No time to stop I said and just kept going as I was leading the way to Dublin on the M9. We travelled along in 5th gear while I was listening to the sound of the engine to judge what my speed was and watched Brian in the rear few mirror to see if he was ok.

About 8.40 we exited the M50 to head in to Tempelogue and on to Terenure. We stopped at a Pump station to stock up on a bit of Coke and enough smokes to carry me through the day. I asked Brian if we did a nice steady 120 which he answered 140 more like it, upon which I explained to him what had happened to my controls. Vincent whom we were to meet off the M50 exit was still a bit away so we decided to head on to be at our stand in the Arena by 9 am.

On arrival at Terenure college we presented Isabella from the Jag-Club with a bottle of Chablis for all the help she gave me to have all the entries’ I send her organised, including a few late ones and one mishap on my behalf. Stephen R. was already there with his Friend the camping seats already out relaxing and taking in a beautiful morning. Derek was within an ears shout when I rang him packed to the rafters with gear in his Trojan Truck. With his arrival all hands were needed to set up the Tent and all our Flags including a little side signage with our Club Logo. We were still setting up our stand as more and more of our Club members arrived well in time before all the traffic jam outside the grounds made it almost impossible to get in. Seeing all the cars arriving kept me busy as I was trying to arrange them in the themes we had decided to display as in from oldest to youngest Targa’s for example and so on. We also left a centre display area to display special ones like the 911/993 Turbo’s, C4S, 964RS or for the two cars from our Club who participated in the Cavalcade from the Mansion house with the new Lord Mayor of Dublin. The two cars we had send to represent the Club for that part of the event where the two Concourse winning cars of Christy S. and Brian K.

In the meantime we settled all in and I had to hand over John the task to look after the collection of the Entry fees and BBQ as I got too busy greeting all our members and directing them with their cars. Ciaran had also arrived in the meantime with a van full of BBQ equipment and he was set up beside our Courtesy tent with his impressive tools. This was the first time the Club had organised a BBQ for the Terenure show but what was on offer between the chippers in the arena and the feast we would have with the BBQ, the BBQ would win hands down.

Our stand was filling up while we had a slightly smaller plot then last year we just about managed to get all the cars in place, while we had to improvise a little in order to get all in situ. In the meantime lots of the owners polished and touched up the cars for presentation as time flew past and before we knew it was time to eat as everybody was hungry after all the banter / work everybody had put in to organise themselves or helping to get our stand up. Sausages, Chicken, a variety of 8 different Salads and buns where on offer and everybody could ask for seconds as no one was left hungry by Ciaran as swung into full action of his trade which he displayed with professional expertise. Soft drinks and water was the beverages as we all still had to drive, while this was not the time or the day to have a few drinks as we would have had on other occasions.

As we awaited the arrival of the Cavalcade it became apparent that they were way behind schedule as they should have arrived around 13.30 hrs. it turned out they only arrived around 14.30 or thereabouts. The sun had been beating down all day with no one complaining, when Derek and I found it safe to skip away for a few minutes to visit the Chairman of the Jag Club who had invited us to their Tent. In the meantime some of our Members themselves had a walk around after the BBQ by having a look around at the cars and Clubs on display in the Arena.

Damien and Mick took on the task of judging our cars for the Concourse competition of the day. On offer were small Trophy’s for class winners and the “Terenure Perpetual Trophy” for the overall winner.

As you all know by now Eamon won the PCI-Terenure Perpetual Trophy with his 993 4S last year’s second placed winner in the street concourse category.

All in all everybody went home after an eventful day with at least a memorial plate and a PCI-Cup or as in ten cases with small trophy’s as winners in their classes. Some did go home somewhat roasted from the sunny day we had and hoping the summer has finally started.

Roll on Radisson BBQ was echoed throughout the plot as we all departed and looked forward to our main event of the PCI yearly events Calendar.

I would also like to thank my right hand man Derek who tirelessly took control of the setup of our stand, as well as all the helpers who without asking lend a hand to make the stand looking very professional indeed as well as John for collecting money’s for BBQ and entry fees, Margaret for looking after Club members renewals, Damien and Mick judging the cars which was not an easy task as all the cars presented where in top class condition.

It leaves me only to thank everybody for coming and making this one of the best events this year so far and hope to see you again soon.

Many thanks George
